The problem of homelessness in the United States is a grave one, with many homeless mentally ill cycling in and out of hospitals or jails. Despite the large scope of the problem, there are not many organizations or programs dedicated to helping the 40 percent of the nation’s homeless population who are living with mental illness. Even mentally ill people who do not experience actual homelessness are too often exiled to marginal, isolated lives in unsuitable living arrangements.
