HOMES residents are provided with all the support and materials they need to live independently. The houses are completely furnished, including kitchen appliances, household linens, and eating utensils. HOMES also supplies supplemental food and cleaning supplies when donations are received, and staff members work with residents to make sure that each is responsible for his or her individualized chores and personal meal preparation. Residence at HOMES helps clients gain the skills needed for self-sufficient living, and makes a lasting impact on their skill levels and quality of life. As residents graduate from HOMES into completely independent living, they are assisted with obtaining furniture and housekeeping “starter kits” to help them establish their new home. (“Starter kits” include cleaning supplies, household paper products, and other items necessary for successful independent living.) Donating items is an effective way of assisting H.O.M.E.S. in its efforts to help the mentally ill in Orange County. Useful supplies include non-perishable food, cleaning products, paper goods, light bulbs, household linens, cooking and serving wares, etc. Appliances and furniture in good working condition are often accepted, primarily for donation to individual residents who are “graduating” into their own apartment.
