HOMES provides a multi-faceted approach to help mentally ill residents achieve success and a better quality of life. Each resident is encouraged to build upon strengths and increase skills to promote self-confidence and self-sufficiency.
- Regular house meetings with all residents to assess needs and discuss activities, chores, and relationships
- Coaching resident on life skills such as cooking, housekeeping, time management, socialization, and budgeting
- Organizing recreational and social activities for residents, including live theater, sporting events, camping, and holiday parties
- Creating activity plans with each individual to promote involvement in the community for 20 or more hours each week.
- Paid or volunteer work
- Education or vocational training
- Mental health treatment
- Clubhouse or other group participation
- 12-step recovery program meetings and activities
- Participation in religious or spiritual pursuits
- Involvement in mainstream social or recreational clubs
The Alumni Program encourages graduates to stay connected with HOMES staff and peers; a monthly newsletter informs residents and graduates of upcoming events and social activities. The graduates serve as role models and symbols of hope for current residents, and many have assumed leadership roles in the larger mental health community.
- Subsidized rent that is affordable for people subsisting on SSI benefits
- A private furnished bedroom for each resident
- All utilities, furniture, appliances and household items, plus telephone and cable TV service in the common living areas, are included in the rent
- $50 placed into “set-aside” savings each month from the resident’s rent. These funds are returned to residents upon graduation, to be used for a security deposit, furniture, or other costs associated with moving into their own apartment
- Assistance applying for Section 8 or other housing programs, and assistance moving into fully independent living upon graduation
