HOMES continuously accepts new applications from potential residents; when no immediate vacancies are available, applications are placed on a waiting list. Applicants selected from the waiting list will be interviewed by HOMES staff, and the top candidates are generally invited to a house meeting for residents to give input, assisting the staff in making the final decision.
Eligible candidates are low-income adults recovering from mental illness who would be able to live independently with supportive services. Preference is given to clients already linked with mental health services in Orange County, but individuals from outside the area will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Participation in structured activities outside the house at least 20 hours per week; activities can include paid or volunteer work, school or vocational training, Clubhouse participation, mental health treatment, 12-step or religious activities, or involvement in mainstream community clubs or organizations
- Ability to follow house rules and live cooperatively with other residents
- Ability to self-manage prescribed medication
- Be free for at least 6 months from psychiatric hospitalization, drug or alcohol abuse, or other behaviors which could endanger one’s self or others
- Enrollment with a local mental health provider (private or county)
