HOMES became a non-profit agency in November 1985, to provide affordable supportive housing for adults with mental illness in Orange County. HOMES was founded by community leaders and family members including Ramona Schneider and Eileen Miller, who recognized the need for a housing alternative that offered greater independence and privacy than a licensed Board & Care home, but more structure and support than living completely alone in an apartment. HOMES started their program with a single house, and today provides supportive independent living to 63 individuals in six houses and a 29-unit apartment building. In 2007 the HOMES Board expressed a commitment to expand further and plan to provide 200 units of supportive housing by 2009; towards that end, construction of a new apartment building in Anaheim commenced in April of 2008. HOMES offers transitional and permanent housing for adults recovering from mental illness, and is the only non-profit agency in Orange County to provide permanent supportive independent housing for this population.
